After three years in Boston attending college, Mallory Wells has come home to Casper, Maine to care for her father, who is dying from cancer. She left Casper without looking back, leaving her small-town life and everyone in it, behind. Including her sexy high school sweetheart.
Luke Bates was devastated when Mallory left him for the city life. He managed to pull himself together and move on, even if only just barely. When Mallory shows up in town, Luke vows to stay away from her at all costs. So why does he keep checking in on her and her father, showing up when he's clearly uninvited? Maybe Luke isn't as 'over her' as he thought.

Liezel’s Thoughts:

I liked the concept of this story. To me this was a story about finding love at a very young age. But because of various reasons, the timing just wasn’t right for them. Both Mallory and Luke needed to mature and grow into their own individuality before making that final commitment. Mallory moves away to Boston for college while Luke stays in Casper, Maine. While they live their separate lives and try to move into newer relationships they just can not find what they’re looking for. When her dad – Joe becomes sick she decides to move back home to care for him. As much as Luke and Mallory attempt to avoid each other, it being a small town their paths constantly cross. Joe has been a father figure to Luke just as much as he has been for Mallory and for them to lose him both brings them closer together than they ever were.

Being a debut in the series I thought the author did a good job introducing the characters. I did however have a difficult time connecting with the heroine in the story – mostly in the beginning.  I thought that Mallory was too fickle. While this could be blamed on the stress, the way she changed her mind constantly  left me a little confused. I did however enjoy Luke’s character in this story. I loved that when the realization sunk in, he was willing to give up everything for Mallory.

I was  hesitant with how Luke and Mallory’s relationship was described in the early years. They seemed disconnected somehow, almost as if they didn’t belong together. But when they rekindled their relationship it was the total opposite.  Their chemistry was much more profound. Their connection  developed into something deeper after losing someone so vital in their lives. I did find it sad that we had to lose the best character in the story for them to finally accept that they belong together.

I  do need to commend how the writer described Joe. In most of the books that I’ve read lately I hear about drunken, addicted and abusive fathers. Joe on the other hand had a heart of gold. Self-sacrificing, wise and supportive, practically a saint! And he just wasn’t like this towards his daughter but even towards her friends most especially Luke.

I did enjoyed this book. Like I said above it was okay for a debut. A good thing is that it was  shorter than your usual novel but still manages to get the story delivered without an annoying cliffhanger. I say that this one is worth looking into.

Synopsis:

Rainey Daniels has been keeping a secret since she left her hometown, three years ago. The death of a friend’s father, though, has her questioning whether or not running away from her past is what’s best for her future. Add sexy Chris Baker in the mix and she’s even more unsure. After all, life is short.
Baker is an all-around good guy with a great sense of humor struggling to keep his new bar afloat. And he always thought Rainey was hot, even when she carried a few extra pounds in high school. Hell, he thinks she’s too skinny now. He knows she’s hiding something, too, but when he pushes the issue, she pushes him away. He tries not to care; she only wants a summer fling, right? But when her life is threatened, he realizes he may just be in love with her… and then he learns her secret. Can they find love together before it’s too late?
