Vampires exist among us. They can be our neighbor, best friend, our child's teacher ... They alter their aged appearance based upon the amount of blood they consume. They move to a new area, drink a lot of blood, and appear young. Slowly they limit their intake of blood and age, right in front of our unsuspecting eyes. After decades, they fake their death, move, and do it over and over again. Most live quiet lives in an effort to blend in. Some however want power and control. The Colony is an elite group of vampires sworn to protect the President of the United States from these rogue vampires.

Sterling, a half-breed vampire who works with a covert team of vampires to protect the President of the United States, is the weakest link in the chain for his team, and he knows it. His unique ability to glean information from inanimate objects has Sterling spending much of his lonely life down in the evidence room at FBI headquarters. His current case involves the kidnapping of vampire children by a religious cult trying to save them. Sterling snatches the opportunity to do some field work by teaming up with a purebred vampire, Kate, who is the nanny of one of the missing children. Sterling's world is turned upside down by Kate.

She is everything Sterling could hope for in a mate, and he wonders if she'd ever consider loving a half-breed. Kate is beautiful, intelligent, charming and sophisticated - but has led a sheltered life and is considered handicapped by vampire standards. Will she be willing to trust Sterling with her dark personal secret? Could she be able to open her heart to a bad-boy who's never known true love before? Together, can they save the children and find true love?

Liezel’s Thoughts:

It was mentioned to me that this book could be read as a standalone and that was what I was planning to originally do. I found myself  thoroughly enjoyed  this book that after reading United Service I decided to take advantage of the $0.99 Eternal Service promo and ended up reading both instead. I have to say that it gave me an even better appreciation of this series.

What I found most  intriguing about it was the unique vampire world building that was involved. There are so many different vampire folklore  out there and while I prefer the traditional variation, the distinct characteristics of the vampires in this series is what captured and held my attention.

While Book 1 is about Raymond and Alex, 2 focuses on Sterling and Kate. Honestly I found both characters annoying in the beginning.  Kate is this sexy and sophisticated woman one minute  then next she’s this immature person reading  trashy magazines while popping  gum like a maniac. At first I thought she was a teenager hiding in a woman’s body  but nope – I wasn’t even close. It took a while for her to finally let out her secret but when she does every odd behavior is totally explainable. I would have never guessed what was going on with her and I loved how unpredictable it all was.

Sterling on the other hand was this heartless and arrogant  half-breed that just seemed to dislike life in general. Come to find out he’s just misunderstood. Because of his odd lifestyle, he is constantly being misjudged  by those closest to him. For decades he holds on to these very important secrets that could change every atrocious opinion that they have of him but he decides to keep it to himself which causes him even more despair. On top of all that, he also experiences  excruciating side effects when using his vampiric gifts. Mind you that those gifts are always used in a selfless manner. Knowing all this, I felt sorry for the guy who I thought was extremely annoying in the beginning.

Kate is just  unexplainable eccentric while  Sterling is  just plain weird. Can this possible be a good pairing? Hell yeah! Wait until you see how amazing these two complement each other. They are fantastic together in every way and I can not wait to see how they both will further grow and progress in the future books.

I have to admit that I did have a hard time getting into the book at first because of the tedious bloodline/family line information that was necessary to know but after getting through all of that it was smooth sailing from there.

United Service isn’t just a notable paranormal romance, it also has a very strong and suspenseful plot line that makes it  even more captivating.  Just like the first book there is a perfect balance between the two which I also appreciated and this is one of the many reasons why I’m looking forward to reading  more of this series.

Excerpt:

Sterling closed his hotel room door and took a long, deep breath before heading towards Kate’s room where he knew Kate and Ben waited for him. They needed to save the children. Duty called. He never thought too much of being a hero. All that mattered was that the people were safe, or they had had closure. Of course, most days he had sat alone in an evidence room with a headache.

Traveling around with a lovely woman was a rarity. He sighed heavily as he leaned on the closed hotel room door. It was time to be superman to everyone and everything in this whole damn world.

He turned and hit the door soundly with his fist. Luckily, the wood did not split in two. He didn’t know what the hell was going on with Kate, between the two of them, or fuck, life in general now. He needed to put all personal issues aside and focus on those missing kids. But, all he wanted was Kate. He wanted her body. He needed her like he had never needed anything else in his life.

Their kiss still lingered on his lips. He remained at the door another moment before going back to Kate’s room. He needed to keep his thoughts on their mission, but he knew that with just one look at her, that he would be tempted to be the most selfish bastard in the world. He remembered the feel of her as she lay under him. Her soft skin. Her delicious lips.

He quickly walked down the hallway to Kate’s room and found the door open, so he let himself in. Ben stood alone in the center of the room. “Where’s Kate,” Sterling asked.

“Bathroom.” Ben glanced over to Sterling. “Like I told Kate, I found the next victim. She’s only a few hours away.”

“Why do the Hands of God suspect her as a pre–trans?”

Ben’s eyes shifted away. Slightly under his breath he said, “She’s sort of related to Stephen Miller.”

Sterling spied two coffees on the dresser, and one still sitting in the cardboard container. He walked over and claimed the cup. “Related? How?”

Ben sheepishly answered. “The two are paired off for marriage after they transition.”

Sterling raised the cup to his lips and took a sip of the hot liquid. The brew tasted more bitter than normal. Of course the two were in an arranged marriage. The two were teenagers, both probably from wealthy families … they were probably paired off while still in diapers. Super easy. Incredibly convenient.

Hot coffee spilled from the cup as Sterling realized he was crushing it. He set the cup down and gave Ben a nod. “Let’s get going.” Turning towards the bathroom he shouted, “Kate.”
