Life shouldn’t be about picking up the pieces.

Beth Bradshaw has spent her life hiding from her tragic past. From the moment a trusted family friend steals her innocence until the moment another rescues her, she struggles to just survive.

Surrounded by the comfort and protection of her extended family, Beth embarks on a journey of healing far from the horrors of her home. In her darkest moments, she meets a boy named Ryan. For one incredible summer, Ryan shows Beth what it’s like to act her own age.

To feel free and let go.
If only for a while.

Years later, another tragedy threatens to shatter the life Beth has carefully crafted. When faced, yet again, with more pieces to pick up, Beth begins to question what her choices have cost her.
Leaving her old life behind, she sets forth on a pilgrimage that will bring her back to the boy she could never forget. He wants to help her pick up the pieces of her life, but is she willing to do what it takes to become whole again?

Can she trust him with a piece of herself?

Liezel’s Thoughts:

“We are all broken in one way or another. It’s how we put those pieces back together that matters. You, my darling, are going to fit the pieces back together again, you’ll see.”

If you’ve read some of my reviews I always mention that have  issues with reading stories that involve child abuse and molestation. I keep on telling myself that they are just stories and are just fiction but they still make me uncomfortable.  I have no idea why. Unlike the other stories though this one didn’t bother me as much because the scenes weren’t written as graphic as the one’s, I’ve previously read. It gave just enough information where the reader could develop their own conclusions as to what happened to Beth during those horrible events.

“Together forever. Never apart. Maybe in distance but never in heart. You are with me, baby girl and I’m with you. Always.”

I love the characters in this story. Most especially Tommy.  He was Beth’s saving grace. After that Drew episode, I knew that he would always be someone important in Beth’s life. From the beginning, til the end he always had Beth’s best interest at heart. He was her savior and her protector, the constant father figure in her life. The relationship that they had was just remarkable. It was disappointing to me that they grew apart as she grew older. In a way, I don’t blame her for skipping the annual vacations because of all the bad memories that they would bring back.

What happened, in the end, was painful to me. I bawled my eyes out since he was my favorite character in the book. That letter she wrote to him…ahhh! It took me days to decide if that was really necessary for the story and I really think it was justifiable. The story would not have progressed as smoothly as it did without that distressing event.  It seemed that it just made the story even more perfect. It leads to Beth and Ryan’s reunion and what a reunion it was!

I simply loved this story. It was heartbreaking and heartwarming. It moved me. I cried in sadness and in happiness. If you’re looking for something emotional yet beautiful then this is the book for you.  Definitely, a must read.

The Verdict:

rating-5

My Casting Picks:

As per Pinterest,  the author chose Charlie Hunnam as Ryan and Camila Luddington as Beth. I think they would be perfect.

After A While

Veronica A. Shoffstall

After a while you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul.

And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning and company doesn’t mean security.

And you begin to learn that kisses aren’t contracts and presents aren’t promises.

And you begin to accept your defeats with your head up and your eyes ahead, with the grace of an adult, not the grief of a child.

And you learn to build all your roads on today because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for plans, and futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight. .

After a while you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much.

So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to leave you flowers.

And you learn that you really can endure;
You really are strong, you really do have worth.
And you learn, and you learn
With every goodbye you learn

About Maggi Myers

Born in West Des Moines, IA and raised in Miami, FL, I have an appreciation for the heartland and really good cuban food.

I want to write stories that make people think. The things you thought you knew about other people and their lives? I want to twist those perceptions and make you question everything.

I am a big fan of the underdog. The one that everyone else has written off? That’s where my heart is and where my most inspired writing happens.
