“We are all pawns in some one else’s game.”

No one knows this better than Violet Phillips. When her beloved mentor goes missing, she suspects murder, which sends her spiraling out of control and away from the stable life she has built for herself. Soon, her past will begin seeping out with a vengeance.

“I will teach you how this game is played.”

Self-destruction threatens to consume Violet when a handsome neighbor that has been watching her from afar intervenes on her behalf. Shepard Leone may be six years younger, but it does not stop him from seducing her ears as well as her heart.

“Fascinating how much life can change in twenty-four hours.”

When Violet is forced to go down a dark road into a past where she must confront the demons that nearly destroyed her, will she be unable to deviate? Struggling with the loss of her missing friend, Shepard will find a way in and reawaken desires that she thought were forever lost. But Violet never forgets that if you are not careful, distractions will be your undoing.

Liezel’s Thoughts:

“I cannot promise you that it is going to be easy, but only that it will be worth it.”

Ms. Brooks seriously set the bar high for debut authors out there. Someone asked recently what was the latest book that made you stay up all night? This was it for me. As soon as I started the story it just grabbed me and I couldn’t let go until I was done. While some may say that there was had way too much narration, I thought it was just right. At first, I thought I would be bored with the scientific parts but the information given wasn’t too detailed – it was just enough to get by.

The other parts of the story was more than detailed. I love how she described every emotion. When Violet was happy I was happy, when she was depressed I was too. And yes I feel in love with Sheppard like everyone else and was heartbroken with how it ended. Then I found myself falling in love with Connor also. He loved her, he really did but why did he have to be such a douche twice over? When she cried, I cried for her. Then I started getting  angry at the author… how could you play with my emotions like that? That is how good the writing was to me.

“Every fiber of my being was tied into the man holding me. The messed up part of me kept repeating that I would hurt him, yet the long forgotten goodness within shouted for me to let him love me back….”

I also loved how she took us to Europe and how authentic the descriptions of the locales were. For one not being as well-traveled I found myself looking up these places and sure enough, they do exist and appreciated that she put enough time into describing those experiences through Vy’s eyes. The only thing that was a little challenging about this one was you really had to pay attention. The book brings you back and forth into  Vy’s timeline and if you didn’t read into it then you might end up confused. I suggest you just read though it. It will be so worth it in the end.

My only comment or suggestion? I wish I could’ve read into Sheppard’s POV. I wanted to know how he felt that first time, what he thought of his father and that incident and I want to know what he was doing those six years and how he ended up in the Dear Doctors service. I’m hoping J.L. Brooks decides to write Sheppard’s story. If you are looking for something more suspenseful yet still full of emotion, passion and romance than this one is for you.

The Verdict:

rating-5

Casting:

It was mentioned in a  release event  that Charlie Siem was the authors muse for Sheppard. My choice for Violet is Kate Hudson.
