Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets - and human lives.

In The Indigo Spell, Sydney was torn between the Alchemist way of life and what her heart and gut were telling her to do. And in one breathtaking moment that Richelle Mead fans will never forget, she made a decision that shocked even her. . . .

But the struggle isn't over for Sydney. As she navigates the aftermath of her life-changing decision, she still finds herself pulled in too many directions at once. Her sister Zoe has arrived, and while Sydney longs to grow closer to her, there's still so much she must keep secret. Working with Marcus has changed the way she views the Alchemists, and Sydney must tread a careful path as she harnesses her profound magical ability to undermine the way of life she was raised to defend. Consumed by passion and vengeance, Sydney struggles to keep her secret life under wraps as the threat of exposure — and re-education — looms larger than ever.

Pulses will race throughout this smoldering fourth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where no secret is safe.

My Thoughts:

As I mentioned in my previous review, Sydney is stepping out of the box and is broadening her horizons in regards to her skills. While the alchemists traditions are important to her she realizes that some of them are flawed. She covertly continues to go out of her way to make a difference in the human, witch and even the vampire world – something that would never be accepted by her kind.
Adrian on the other hand … I thought he changed so much for the better in The Indigo Spell but you haven’t seen nothing yet! For someone who used to be so arrogant and selfish, he too is finally making a mark in the world and using spirit to help his people.

His relationship with Sydney further develops and I can’t help but feel elated for the couple. Of course it doesn’t come that easy being that their relationship is considered taboo but that doesn’t stop them one bit if anything it makes their bond stronger.

But no matter how hard they keep things hidden their secrets finally emerge putting both of them at risk, more so on Sydney’s end. Which then leads the story to a heart pounding and alarming WTF cliffhanger.

“…if she’d ever had any doubts about whether I wanted to taste her blood, I knew they vanished then and there. It was the taste of her mouth, the taste of her skin…those were what I craved, the things that drove me wild.” – Adrian

What I thought about the entire story? For me, the series just keeps getting better and better. I love how each and everyone one of the characters continue to grow and mature. I also like that the books aren’t just purely about Sydney and Adrain rather it also features the strengths of the entire group (esp <3 Eddie). Of course I also love hearing about Lissa and how her reign as queen is progressing.

I thought the bit of action added spiced up the story  and further demonstrated how the group work well as a team despite the fact they belong too different groups. Every single one of them had something to offer as long as they worked together.

The romance was a tad light in my opinion but it didn’t fail  to show us how deep the couple cared and how dedicated they were to each other. I thought it was great that it was written in both POV’s. Hearing what Adrian’s thoughts and feelings was the icing on the cake for me. In those last chapters I could literally feel how empty he felt without her. It was truly heartbreaking.

The cliffhanger is a little upsetting but I’m sure Richelle Mead won’t disappoint us in delivering yet another amazing story. I enjoyed this one and think that July 29 can’t get here soon enough!

The Verdict:

rating-4
