Sound is an abstract concept for most people. We spend our lives blocking out the static in order to focus on what we believe is important. But what if, when the clarity fades into silence, it's the obscure background noise that you would give anything to hold on to?

I've always been a fighter. With parents who barely managed to stay out of jail and two little brothers who narrowly avoided foster care, I became skilled at dodging the punches life threw at me. Growing up, I didn’t have anything I could call my own, but from the moment I met Eliza Reynolds, she was always mine. I became utterly addicted to her and the escape from reality we provided each other. Throughout the years, she had boyfriends and I had girlfriends, but there wasn't a single night that I didn’t hear her voice.

You see, meeting the love of my life at age thirteen was never part of my plan. However, neither was gradually going deaf at the age of twenty-one.

They both happened anyway.

Now, I'm on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life.
Fighting for my career.
Fighting the impending silence.
Fighting for her.

Every night, just before falling asleep, she sighs as a final conscious breath leaves her.

I think that's the sound I'll miss the most.

Liezel’s Thoughts:

If you asked me to describe this book in one word… it would be magnificent. “Fighting Silence” had a good mix of suspense, drama and of course romance. What I loved most about the story was the character building.

Early on you couldn’t help but become well attached to both Eliza and Till. They both had a rough upbringing (which was mostly because of their negligent parents) but that did not prevent them from going after their dreams.

The first time they stumbled upon each other when they were just thirteen they knew that they were destined to be together. Back then, they felt this pull towards each other but never acted upon it because they knew it wasn’t the appropriate time. For Till, he knew as long as he was living in a life of poverty it would never be the right time. He wanted to give Eliza the world but it had different plans for him.

Till could never catch a break. His family life was in shambles, he was working nonstop to make ends meet, he was facing an inevitable disability and at one point didn’t have that one supporter that he couldn’t live without. Despite all the weight on his shoulders he endured. When he did finally catch a break, he made sure that it wasn’t just him that would benefit but his entire family. It never was just about him.

“You always say that you love me, but you have given me so much more. And because of that, I will spend a lifetime fighting to give you the world.”

Eliza was the perfect match for Till. They both kept each other sane. I admired how she supported Till throughout everything him and his brothers went through. She should’ve given up a long time ago but because of the love she had for Till she never even thought that was an option. Just as he was everything to her, it was the same for him too.

What I loved most about them was the love they shared. Theirs was a love so pure. It defied poverty, distance, a disability and time itself yet it never faltered.  They were tested so many times but they always stayed true to themselves. As long as they were together they could conquered all the obstacles together.

Just as much as I’ve come to enjoy Till and Eliza’s characters I liked the supporting characters too. Not only was I impressed with Flint and Quarry but also with Slate. I can not begin to tell you how excited I am to read more about them in their own books.

“Fighting Silence” was a terrific read. One that I would definitely add to my favorite fighter romance list.

The Verdict:

About Aly Martinez

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, charcuterie boards, and her mildly neurotic golden retriever. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
