A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

Liezel’s Thoughts:

Of all the books that Emma Chase has written so far I would have to say that “Sustained” is by far my favorite. This is pretty significant considering her back to back bestsellers. The major reason why I adored this book was because of the remarkable characters.

After a horrific accident claims her brother’s life, Chelsea McQuaid puts her entire life on hold and becomes the sole guardian to six of her nephews and nieces. Considering their ages, I couldn’t even begin to imagine how huge of responsibility that is. Just the thought of caring for all those kids would give anyone a panic attack but in Chelsea’s case she accepts her new responsibility with ease.  Sure she had plenty of  rough moments (which mom doesn’t?) but with each and every issue that occurred she never faltered in providing the best care she possibly could provide given the circumstances. The unfathomable love, care and devotion  that she continuously demonstrated with each and every one of the children was definitely what made her extraordinary.

“I want her – this fearless, stunning woman. And I want the kids. Those perfect, awful, amazing children – whom she loves with every inch of her soul. I want them to be mine. Mine to hold, mine to protect and teach. Their joy, their laughter, their love. I want to come home to it, bask in it, be the reason for it.
But even more than that, I want to deserve them.”

I honestly had a considerable amount of apprehension with Chelsea’s counterpart, Jake Becker.  Knowing his dating history (or lack thereof) I was convinced that he would never get pass her new lifestyle but I was elated that the author proved me wrong. He fell right into the family’s routine. When I find out more about Jake’s history I began to see what he  really was capable of. He did, in fact, have a heart of gold despite not having any previous  relationships. It was as if he was waiting for the right person to come along and Chelsea was definitely the one.

I thought that the couple fit perfectly. Jake complimented Chelsea completely. The passion that they shared was simply magnificent! I loved that even with their hectic schedules and all those children running around that  they always managed to fit in these brief yet intimate moments. I admired how Jake knew exactly how to handle each kid and found every moment he spent with them quite endearing. Like I said, these characters were exceptional.

For me, everything about this book was exquisitely done. My only complaint is that it ended! I can go on and on  about just how much I loved this book but I think I will end it here by saying that “Sustained” is definitely a “MUST READ”!
