Marcus Borden has always been used to power and control. After a crime-filled upbringing in a very harsh neighbourhood, Borden leaves his hometown, returning four years later mysteriously rich and unrecognizable, with one woman on his mind.

As a fiercely independent woman, Emma Warne knows all about hard living. Having kept to herself most of her life, the last thing she expects is to be thrust into the world of infamous criminal Marcus Borden, the dangerous man the entire city fears and loathes. But the more she pushes him away, the more he comes back, taking over her life and stripping her of her control she desperately clings to.

Once Borden has his sights on her, Emma is going nowhere anytime soon, and what she doesn't expect least of all... is that she may not want to either.

Liezel’s Thoughts:

I stumbled across this gem while going through my Kindle  feed late last night. The synopsis caught my attention and so I decided I would read a few chapters before going to bed but once I started I couldn’t stop. This book was certainly all-consuming! It made me remember just how much I loved discovering new-to-me authors especially magnificent ones like R.J.Lewis.

“Borden” is about a man from the wrong side of the tracks falling for a beautiful and privileged young woman named Kate. He knew just from their very first tryst that he was way out of his league. He was prepared to let her go, but Kate continued to push until it was much too late. Needless to say, his very first relationship was life changing. Heart-breaking. From then on, Borden vowed not to let anyone get that close to him ever again. Considering his dangerous lifestyle, this pledge would have been easy to keep yet once he reencounters a young woman way back from his past his vow is thrown out the window.

Early on Borden knew that Emma was different. She certainly was not like any woman that he had met before. She should have been terrified as everybody else was in Borden’s presence, but Emma wasn’t the sort that could be easily intimidated. She grew up in Borden’s world and this was one of the many traits that earned the untouchable Borden’s interest.

“I never wanted to be in this position again, but I can’t get you out of my fucking head. I can’t breathe without thinking about you, and I..I feel guilt over it.”

Reading the first few chapters, I was convinced that Kate would be it for Borden. He cared for her wholeheartedly to the point where he did so many things just to earn her. I would never have thought that he would get over that immense love yet as soon as Emma comes into Borden’s life it was as if she was the one. These two in all accounts fit together completely. It was as if she was specifically brought into this world just for him. This, in my opinion, was  the strongest appeal of this entire story. Their chemistry, the passion and that inner connection between the couple was beyond spectacular.

That wasn’t the only thing that was spectacular. Despite Borden’s “crazy” his character development was remarkable. I appreciated how he channeled all the badness in his life and created something productive. Yes, he was still a thug but since  the community benefited it seemed to have balanced everything out. If anything, he needed this power  to protect those that he cared about.

I thought the story itself was striking – not like anything that I have read before. It was intense, gritty and enrapturing. The plot to me was outstanding. I loved that even if it is the first book in a two-part series that the author didn’t leave us hanging. Instead, she ended it nicely and adequately prepped us for the next installment.

The negative part of “Borden” is the horrible formatting. This would  normally have frustrated me, forcing me to shelve it, but the story was good enough to make me look past those issues. If spelling and grammatical errors are not a priority then I am certain that you will come to love this remarkable love story as much as I did.
