Tessa is a good girl with a sweet, reliable boyfriend back home. She’s got direction, ambition, and a mother who’s intent on keeping her that way.
But she’s barely moved into her freshman dorm when she runs into Hardin. With his tousled brown hair, cocky British accent, tattoos, and lip ring, Hardin is cute and different from what she’s used to.
But he’s also rude—to the point of cruelty, even. For all his attitude, Tessa should hate Hardin. And she does—until she finds herself alone with him in his room. Something about his dark mood grabs her, and when they kiss it ignites within her a passion she’s never known before.
He’ll call her beautiful, then insist he isn't the one for her and disappear again and again. Despite the reckless way he treats her, Tessa is compelled to dig deeper and find the real Hardin beneath all his lies. He pushes her away again and again, yet every time she pushes back, he only pulls her in deeper.
Tessa already has the perfect boyfriend. So why is she trying so hard to overcome her own hurt pride and Hardin’s prejudice about nice girls like her?
Unless…could this be love?

It has been awhile since I’ve felt so torn about a book and I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I wanted to just set it aside (putting it nicely) and move on to the next one. But as I delved further and further into this complex story I couldn’t put it down. The expression “watching a trainwreck in slow motion” is the best way I can describe it.
“After” is about a young, innocent and naive Tessa navigating a new chapter in her life. College. She was the ideal daughter but once she gets tangled up in her roommate and her friend’s lifestyle -everything changes. A part of the change is Hardin.
Hardin is quite the jerk and at every chance he gets he manages to push her buttons. The love-hate thing that they had going on certainly added to the drama and the angst but once they made peace things went downhill or perhaps uphill (depending on how you look at it) from there.
For someone so young, who had so much potential I couldn’t understand why Tessa would take on so much abuse. This is unheard of right? especially in the teenage world but this is what exactly goes on no matter how you look at it.
There were so many times that I was frustrated with Tessa’s decisions and Hardin’s actions where I felt the need to slap some sense into them. Then at a turn of a hat, Anna Todd would have me feeling the complete opposite. She delivered some of these remarkably beautiful and heartwarming moments that has you forgetting what just occurred.
This goes on in pretty much most of the book. The question is did I like it? Like I said, I can’t decide. Will I be reading the next book? I’m leaning towards a YES. The ending of After ends with so much uncertainty that has my mind reeling. I will be sure to let you know how it goes…
