They say that every tragic hero has a fatal flaw, a secret sin, a tiny stitch sewn into his future since birth. And here I am. My sins are no longer secret. My flaws have never been more fatal. And I’ve never been closer to tragedy than I am now.

I am a man who loves, a man whose love demands much in return. I am a king, a king who was foolish enough to build a kingdom on the bones of the past. I am a husband and a lover and a soldier and a father and a president.
And I will survive this.

Long live the king.

Liezel’s Thoughts:

A few friends read this finale way before I even started and to witness their reactions immediately after was mind-boggling. I wondered if the tears were perhaps a bit much but as I was finishing up last night, I got it! I completely understood the overwhelming reactions because just like them, this book…. left me completely destroyed.

Maxen Ashley Colchester was always an enigma to me but the mystery completely fades away in the story told mostly in his point of view. I do have to admit that the beginning of the book was difficult to get into. This was because of the extensive narrative but as I got further into the story I realized that the flashbacks were necessary to fully understand what shaped him.

If anything, this is not only where we see just how important his prince Embry means to him but it also explains his sexual proclivities. Ok, so about that … I am not one that often seeks these types of books – books that involve MFM -MMF – MM.  The way Sierra Simone depicts their relationship(s) influenced me to keep an open mind and think outside of the box.

The complex relationship between Greer, Maxen, and Embry is certainly nothing like I’ve read before. It was as if one could not exist without the other. Even when they were apart their souls yearned for each other and when they were together? They were phenomenal. It truly isn’t just about a physical connection between them but it is out-of-this-world, a soul-deep connection between all three of them.

I love how Sierra always manages to push the boundaries with her stories, how she proves to us that no matter the time spent apart, the physical distance, or the unpredictable situation, that love can transcend anything … perhaps even death.
