"Enjoying pain with your pleasure is something you either get, or you don't. If you get it, then you don't really need it explained, because you know how good it feels, and if you don't get it then no amount of talking is going to convince you it makes sense."

But sometimes you have to explain the unexplainable, especially if the love of your life needs to understand, or she'll leave you. Jason Schuyler is one of Anita Blake's best friends and favorite werewolves, with benefits. J.J. is his lady love, an old flame from childhood who dances at one of the top ballet companies in New York. She's accomplished, beautiful, and she's crazy about him, too. Neither of them wants to be monogamous, so what could go wrong?

J.J. is enthusiastically bisexual, with an emphasis on the female side of things. She plans to keep sleeping with women, because Jason can't meet that need, just like she can't meet Jason's need for rough sex and bondage. J.J. doesn't understand why Jason isn’t content to go elsewhere for a need she can’t fulfil, so Jason asks Anita to help him explain.

Anita is having her own relationship growing pains with her only female lover ever, Jade. Jason suggests that J.J. might be able to help Anita with her girl problem, while she helps him with his kinky explanations. With some encouragement from a few other lovers in Anita's life she reluctantly agrees, and J. J. makes plans to fly into town for an experience that none of them will ever forget.

Liezel’s Thoughts:

Given the title I was expecting  this story would have been told in Jason’s POV or to at least be more about him but I was sadly mistaken. Despite the title it is told in Anita’s POV and her relationship problems are the main focal point of this 23rd installment.

Basically Anita is having issues with her only female lover, Jade. My first reaction was…”What? She’s got a female lover now?  Doesn’t she have enough lovers as it is? How did that happen?” Come to find out that since Jade “became” hers she doesn’t have a choice but to take full responsibility of every aspect of her life and provide her of ALL her needs.

As the story goes on we find out that Anita isn’t happy about this arrangement. Originally I thought that it was because she just wasn’t into women in general but I was proven wrong when J.J. – Jason’s girlfriend (who happens to be bi) volunteers to give Anita  pointers. What better way to give pointers than a proper demo, right? Needless to say, after the all-consuming  (group) sex she discovers that being with women isn’t really the  issue.

That being said, I would have to say that this is what  I enjoyed the most in this book. Those bedroom scenes were very well written. In the previous books I personally thought that LKH could get way too descriptive where it became too lengthy but in “Jason” both events were done  perfectly.

Now we go to the negatives….I honestly do not  understand how this book  became Book 23 in the series.  It lacked substance and did not have a recognizable plot. In my opinion, it would have been better as a novella.

Disappointing as that may seem, I am really looking forward to the next book. The sneak peak into Dead Ice: Book 24  has me  in a tizzy. Seems that  our beloved Jean-Claude returns and Anita accepts a new case and is back at animating. Can’t wait!

The Verdict:
