When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success—his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.

Erotic, amusing, and deeply moving, the Fifty Shades Trilogy is a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.

Liezel’s Thoughts:

For Valentine’s Day, I asked the husband if he would be willing to watch this movie with me. Being my persuasive self, he agreed as long as it was not on release day. But of course, I was way too excited and couldn’t wait ’til the weekend. So what does an independent woman (scoff) like me do? She goes and watches it herself instead.

Walking out of the theater later this afternoon… my first thought was oh-my-gawd, I am so glad I did not drag my poor husband through all of that. Now don’t get me wrong – I’ve enjoyed the entire series and to be honest it is the one series that got me started in reading this genre (which eventually lead me into launching this blog).

But I have to say that that movie adaptation was not so great. It felt like a chopped up version of the book that showed just the major events of the story. Granted there is just so much that you could possibly fit in two hours but to me the movie flow was horrific. There is no way in hell that people who have not read  Fifty Shades or Grey would appreciate the movie no matter the amounts of nudity that was involved.

Moving onto casting… I do have to admit that the first trailer that I saw last year was a letdown. I even remember commenting somewhere that Dakota and Jamie together didn’t work for me. After seeing it, though – my tune has changed! I don’t know what kind of workshop that those two had to go through but whatever it was,  it was a success because their chemistry improved tremendously.

Casting for the some of the supporting actors, however, was questionable especially with Jose and Elliot.  In my mind, Jose would have been the tall, dark and handsome type. Don’t get me started on Elliot’s  character….. He wasn’t anything like I pictured him at all! I needed him to ooze sex appeal,  appear more professional and more mature but instead, he looked younger than Christian. I expected him to be more put together and I guess muscular? He was into construction after all.

Basically, what I am trying to get to is I was expecting much MORE eye candy ( besides Jamie) but instead I felt like I was staring at teenagers instead.  Hey, maybe it’s an age thing…

Would I recommend seeing the movie? Sure if you’ve read the book and just need some sort of imagery. Other than that I would have to stand by what I’ve always said about adaptations …“The Book is ALWAYS better”.

About E.L. James

I’m a former TV executive, wife and mother-of-two based in the leafy suburbs of West London. Since January 2012 my life has taken an extraordinary turn with the runaway success of the Fifty Shades Trilogy. From an early age I had always dreamt of writing stories that readers would fall in love with – and my dreams have come true, thanks to you guys. Now that life seems to have settled down a little, I want to crack on and write my next novel – another adult, provocative romance. I do hope you will enjoy that too.

Thank you for all your support. It has meant the world to me. If any one were to ask me for my thoughts about this whole experience, I would say: life is not a dress rehearsal – seize the day and follow your dreams. I wish you the best of luck.
