In this modern retelling of “Hansel and Gretel,” 13-year-old foster children, Holden and Griselda, escape from their abductor after three years of brutal captivity and try to cross the Shenandoah River on foot. Tragically, one of them makes it to safety but the other is left behind.

Ten years later, Griselda’s boyfriend drags her to a fight club grudge match where her world is turned upside down when she watches Holden step into the ring.

Though the connection between them is fierce, bitter regret, simmering rage and a cache of physical and emotional scars lie between them, just as dangerous as the whitewater of the Shenandoah.

Never Let You Go is a story of fear and hope, defeat and survival, and two people - once profoundly broken – who discover that love is the onlything that can make them whole again.

Liezel’s Thoughts:

There have been several stories  that mention the passage in 1 Corithians 13:4-6 yet never did I consider it a 100% perfect fit until reading “Never Let You Go”. “Love…protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres,” how can it get any more precise than that? And this is just one of the many reasons why I loved this book!

“Never Let You Go” revolves around this modern-day “Hansel and Gretel” who have literally been put through the wringer. As children, both Holden and Griselda endure the unimaginable. At first I thought that foster care would be what would break them but as the story moved along we find out that was just a tip of the iceberg. It was the abduction, the abuse and the imprisonment by one  delusional psychopath that was the crux of the story.

The only thing that made this dreadful situation bearable was the fact that they had each other. That eventually changes however once Griselda  finally finds her escape. Stricken by grief for losing Holden she tries to move on and live her life but at every turn she just can not help feel this immense longing for a boy who she left behind. What was amazing about Griselda was that even after all those years that pass by she never gave up hope that she would find him again. You can’t help but admire her for her resilience and also her perseverance.

“My body is marked with you. My arms. My chest. My eyes. My head. My heart..I can’t erase you. I would have to die to be free of you. D-don’t you see that, Gris? C-can’t you see? There is only you for me.”

What I particularly adored besides the unparalleled love, passion and dedication between this couple is knowing that  fate had a hand in every part of their relationship. There were multiple components that were difficult to accept  but after pondering it through you come to realize that  they needed to go through each challenge to get to their well deserved HEA.

Their journey was no doubt rough and to put it mildly quite heartbreaking. I can not begin to tell you how many times I felt  this ache deep down in my chest every single time they were torn apart but what it all comes down to is  that breathtaking outcome.

I can not compliment Katy Regnery enough for delivering such an astounding story. Everything about it  was brilliantly done. The flow, the delivery and most especially the characters basically everything was simply magnificent.

I will admit that this was the first book I’ve read written by this remarkable author but it certainly won’t be my last.

The Verdict:

My max would be around $5 too but if it is book that I have been waiting on forever then…all bets are off. haha!

  2. Nicole Johnson

My max is $5 unless it’s an ebook I REALLY REALLY want. Then I’ll shell out the extra. My max for paperback/hardback is $20.

I hardly buy Hardbacks now. There’s just sooooo many ebooks you could buy now with $20.

What I also do is request to borrow the ebook via booklending.com. If I don’t get it in a week or so then I end up purchasing and lending after.

For me, if I can get a paperback cheaper than the ebook I’d rather just get the physical book. I don’t normally go beyond $3.99 or $4.99 for an ebook.
