Have you ever gone just a little too far?

Lexie Banks has.

Yep. She just had mind-blowing sex with her stepbrother. In her defense, she was on the rebound, and it’s more of a my-dad-happened-to-marry-a-woman-with-a-super-hot-son situation. But still, he’s been her best friend and confidant for the better part of the last few years … and is so off limits. It’s a good thing she’s leaving in two days for a year abroad in Rome.

But even thousands of miles away, Lexie can’t seem to escape trouble. Raised Catholic, she goes to confession in hopes of alleviating some of her guilt … and maybe not burning in hell. Instead, she stumbles out of the confessional and right into Alessandro Moretti, a young and very easy-on-the-eyes deacon … only eight months away from becoming a priest. Lexie and Alessandro grow closer, and when Alessandro’s signals start changing despite his vow of celibacy, she doesn’t know what to think. She’s torn between falling in love with the man she shouldn’t want and the man she can’t have. And she isn’t sure how she can live with herself either way.

Liezel’s Thoughts:

Talk about double entendre! For years Trent and Lexie have said these words to each other  but what did it truly mean for them? Did they love each other as siblings or lovers or perhaps both. Everything would have been fine if it didn’t go beyond an occasional platonic kiss but when they pushed it even further that’s when all moral issues occur. It  however was perfect timing that Lexie was scheduled to leave for Rome in the next couple days giving them the time away to reflect on what they have done.

With all that  happened with Trent I would have expected Lexie to be contrite and perhaps avoid men  but while  in Rome she somehow develops a deep relationship with Alessandro, a man of God no less! She just can’t seem to stay away from  forbidden men. I’ve questioned her  moral fiber repeatedly but in no shape or form does she maliciously attract these men. If anything she plays a vital role in both of their fates especially with that of Alessandro’s proving that some things are just not meant to be.

“…he closes the few feet between us and wraps me in his strong arms. ‘Love you’, he whispers in my ear. He’s said those words to me a thousand times, but today they feel different.”

I have to say that I adored each of the main characters. Despite all the stressors Lexie was focused on her education and her volunteer work. I liked how motivated and passionate she was with the kids and how she was able to trust enough to overcome her fears.

With Trent…what was there not to like?  I can’t imagine the pain he felt as he witnessed how Rick tore her heart out. You can tell that he was hesitant in their first encounter – he didn’t want his hormones to control him. He knew that whatever happened would change them forever and was willing to restrain himself if their relationship would have been put at risk.

I will admit that in the beginning I did feel that “EEEEEK” factor but  surprisingly I was able to get over that very quickly. I think  how their relationship slowly evolved from a friendship into something more was what made a huge difference.  By the end of the book the author was able to convince me that what they had was real and despite all the consequences that it was definitely something worth fighting  for.

I thought that A Little Too Far  tackled  on some very taboo issues that would make anyone squirm but for me  it was delivered so delicately and written with so much finesse  that it just left me awestruck. Job well done Lisa Desrochers. Very excited to read more about this amazing couple.

Excerpt:

I rocket out of the confessional, and because I’m looking back at the curtain and not watching where I’m going, I don’t see the thing in front of me until I slam into it. All the air leaves my lungs in a whoosh, and it takes me a second to get my breath back. The thing is a person or a horse. I know this because it’s warm, it moves, and it’s bigger than me. That’s all I know for sure until I turn around and see him.

“Oh! I’m sorry, Father,” I say with a bow of my head when I see the person I’ve stumbled into is wearing a black button-down cleric’s shirt and a white collar. He’s taller than Trent, so something over six feet, and though he’s slender, I can tell he’s no stranger to the gym. He’s cut and solid—which I know because he barely budged when I ran into him, and yet he left me breathless. He’s got a hint of dark stubble on his cheeks and chin, where there’s a dimple, and I’d guess he’s older than me, but not by a lot. Maybe mid-twenties. His wavy black hair is combed off his face, and, with his high cheekbones and straight, narrow nose, he looks like the half-naked guy in the Abercrombie jeans ads in my Elle magazines. Except he’s not half-naked. He’s in a priest’s collar.

And I’m staring at him.

With his dark eyes and olive skin, I’m expecting Italian to pour out of his mouth when he opens it, so when his glance flicks to the open confessional door then back to me, and he lifts an eyebrow, and says, “Greater sins have been perpetrated, I’m quite sure,” in a mild Italian accent, my knees go a little weak.
